Today’s consumers are busier than ever. Whether they’re commuting to work, studying between classes, fitting in a quick coffee break or managing packed schedules, convenience has become a major factor in purchasing decisions. However, while consumers are looking for speed and simplicity, they aren’t willing to compromise on enjoyment. Indulgence remains an important part of everyday life, creating a valuable opportunity for foodservice operators.
To better understand changing consumer preferences, we recently conducted research with more than 1,000 Australian consumers. The findings revealed that two-thirds of respondents are increasingly seeking grab and go food options that fit seamlessly into their busy lifestyles. This growing demand highlights the importance of convenient products that can be enjoyed anywhere, at any time.
For cafés, coffee shops, universities, schools and other foodservice venues, grab and go desserts offer a simple way to meet this demand while driving additional revenue. Products such as slices, cookies, muffins and individual tarts provide customers with an easy indulgent treat that requires little commitment, making them a natural addition to any purchase occasion.
Importantly, our research showed that indulgence is a universal consumer need. Regardless of age, lifestyle or purchasing habits, consumers continue to seek small moments of enjoyment throughout their day. While larger desserts remain popular for celebrations and dining occasions, convenient single-serve products allow customers to satisfy cravings when they’re short on time.
The operational benefits for venues are equally compelling. Grab and go desserts require minimal labour, no specialised preparation and little to no staff training. They can be displayed alongside coffee machines, in display cabinets or near point-of-sale areas, encouraging impulse purchases and increasing basket size. For operators looking to maximise profitability without adding complexity, these products present a straightforward solution.
The strong connection between beverages and sweet treats also creates a natural upselling opportunity. Pairing a coffee, tea or cold drink with a muffin, slice or cookie can enhance the customer experience while delivering greater value for the business. With consumers already seeking convenient indulgences, offering a ready-to-enjoy dessert can make the decision easy.
As consumer habits continue to evolve, convenience and indulgence are no longer mutually exclusive. By offering quality grab and go desserts, venues can cater to modern lifestyles, satisfy customer demand and create new opportunities for incremental sales, all while keeping operations simple and efficient.
